Decades in the fire and rescue service, now working for you

A1 was formed by fire safety professionals who wanted to bring the rigour of enforcement to private fire risk assessment.

Who we are

Fire safety inspectors by trade

A1 Fire Safety and Training Solutions Ltd is an independent fire safety consultancy working across the UK. We draw on the expertise of the fire and rescue service nationwide: our directors and senior team are former fire safety inspectors with more than 60 years of service between them, and our assessors are recruited from ex-fire service personnel across the country. That experience spans operational firefighting, community fire safety with vulnerable people, enforcement of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, and built environment risk in high-rise and mid-rise buildings.

As inspectors we audited care homes, sheltered and supported housing, hospitals, higher-risk residential buildings and heritage premises. We served enforcement and prohibition notices, prepared prosecutions and made safeguarding referrals where we found them necessary. Most importantly, we judged other people's fire risk assessments for a living. We know what a suitable and sufficient assessment looks like, and what a poor one costs.

How we work

We recruit our assessors from experienced ex-fire service personnel and hold them to the standard we once enforced. Every assessment is carried out or checked by a senior member of the team. Our conduct with residents follows fire service policy: safeguarding, equality and diversity, conflict management and trauma-informed practice, learned in stressful and sometimes dangerous situations.

We are passionate about prevention. Operational firefighting shows you what happens when it fails, and that is why our action plans focus on fixes that stick rather than paperwork that sits in a drawer.

Directors and senior team

Three complementary backgrounds

Enforcement and audit, community fire safety, and high-rise built environment risk. Together they cover the full range of premises a housing provider, care operator or public body is responsible for.

Enforcement and audit

Fire safety inspection

Years spent auditing premises and other assessors' work under the Fire Safety Order: care homes, sheltered and supported housing, hospitals, high-rise residential and heritage buildings. Enforcement and prohibition notices served, prosecutions prepared.

Community fire safety

Vulnerable residents and care settings

More than a decade of home fire safety visits, training care staff and partnership work with social services, housing and police to protect vulnerable people, plus lead responsibility for hospital, CQC-registered and supported housing premises.

High-rise and built environment

Building safety and evacuation

Built environment risk management in a high-rise and mid-rise team, backed by more than two decades of operational firefighting. Incident-ground experience applied to evacuation strategy and Building Safety Act duties.
